“Transnational” is often used interchangeably with terms such as “globalization,” “diaspora,” “international,” and “cosmopolitan.” Though related to globalization, transnationalism is distinct in its narrower and arguably more manageable frame of reference in its objects of study. Though both fields refer to border-crossing phenomena, transnationalism is not necessarily about people unlike “diaspora,” which is a term used to describe the dispersal of people and communities away from their ancestral homeland. The term “transnational” is also distinct from “international,” which tends to be used to describe relationships between state institutions. Cosmopolitanism too is a separate field of study, which often examines the notion of global citizenship. While all terms are certainly related, it is important to note their differences.
